"The
problem, of course, lies with the realities concealed from us. This
has always been the case. While the American public has slowly grappled
with ongoing injustices visible within our own borders, it
has long failed to discover and correct our government's abuses
abroad. In the end, however, this is our government, and torture is
being utilized in our names and supported by our tax dollars. We are responsible.": Jennifer Harbury: Writer, Lawyer, Human Rights Activist
"The
role of the U.S. in the new world corporate order is going to be to
export security. That means endless wars and weapons in space. The
Pentagon will send our kids off to foreign lands to suppress opposition
to corporate globalization. How will we ever end America's addiction
to war and violence as long as our communities are dependent on
military spending for jobs? We must work to convert the military industrial complex to sustainable technologies like windpower, solar, and mass transit." Bruce Gagnon
"When a well-packaged web of lies has been sold gradually to the
masses over generations, the truth will seem utterly preposterous and
its speaker a raving lunatic." Dresden James.
"Should
I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving
offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my
country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings..." Patrick Henry

City life requires a lot of attention. Navigating a busy sidewalk while
processing loud storefronts and avoiding rogue pigeons may feel like
second-nature at times, but it's actually quite a bit of work for the
human brain.
Psychologists do know that quick
walks through the park can restore our focus, but they're still getting a
handle on just what urbanization means for human cognition.
In case you missed it, I wanted to share with you this incredible segment from last night's Rachel Maddow Show
on the history of MoveOn—how we got started, grew to over 7 million members, and together became such a powerful
political force in America.
It's an inspiring re-telling of some of the most amazing work we've done together, and it also includes an interview
with Ilyse Hogue—a long-time MoveOn powerhouse who we're so proud has just been
named the new President of NARAL Pro-Choice America.
One last thing—I thought Ilyse was so great in this interview that
I was inspired to go right to the NARAL Pro-Choice America website and make a donation. It's
so important that we continue the fight to defend a woman's right to choose, so I hope you'll click here and make a donation
to NARAL Pro-Choice America as well.
Thanks for all you do.
–Anna, Nick, Alejandro, Lenore, and the rest of the team
Want to support our work? MoveOn Civic Action is entirely funded
by our 7 million members—no corporate contributions, no big checks from
CEOs. And our tiny staff ensures that small contributions go a long way.

"The Invention of the Jewish People"
Shlomo Sand
Conventional ideas
about Jewishness hold that Jews are a single ethnic group (or
nationality) with substantial shared biological ancestry going back to
the biblical kingdom of Judea, The core of Sand's historical case is
that the whole story is a myth: a very elaborate fiction, supported by
hordes of eminent scholars, which became foundational and essential for
the state of Israel, but mostly a very recent fabrication without much
evidence.
