"The fault I find with most American newspapers is not the absence of dissent. it is the absence of news. With a dozen or so honorable exceptions, most American newspapers carry very little news. Their main concern is advertising." - I.F. Stone

"History
can come in handy. If you were born yesterday, with no knowledge of
the past, you might easily accept whatever the government tells you.
But knowing a bit of history--while it would not absolutely
prove the government was lying in a given instance--might make you
skeptical, lead you to ask questions, make it more likely that you
would find out the truth." - Howard Zinn

TV News and Extreme Weather: Don't Mention Climate Change
12/18/13
Dramatic
weather-related disasters are ready made for TV news. But what's not on
the screen? The human-made climate change that is affecting, and in
some cases exacerbating, that extreme weather.
A new FAIR survey of the national network newscasts (CBS Evening News, NBC Nightly News, ABC World News)
finds that extreme weather is big news. In the first nine months of
2013, there were 450 segments of 200 words or more that covered extreme
weather: flooding, forest fires, tornadoes, blizzards, hurricanes and
heat waves.
But
of that total, just a tiny fraction--16 segments, or 4 percent of the
total--so much as mentioned the words "climate change," "global warming"
or "greenhouse gases."
So
in what was an unusually active weather year in the United States--a
massive tornado in Oklahoma, deadly flooding in Colorado, massive
wildfires across several Western states and bouts of unseasonable
temperatures across the country--96 percent of extreme weather stories
never discussed the human impact on the climate that is contributing to
these outcomes.
It's almost as if the altered climate and the weather were happening on two different planets.
Collectively, the big five oil companies, like ExxonMobil and BP, made $118 billion in profits in 2012.
Meanwhile Americans across the country continue to struggle with high prices at the pump. And do you know the worst part? While the Big Oil companies rake in obscene profits, they’re also getting billions in taxpayer-funded handouts. I don't know about you, but I find that kind of corporate welfare absolutely disgusting.
The good news is our friends at the League of Conservation Voters are hard at work putting an end to these subsidies.
Why
are we subsidizing one of the most profitable industries? Why does
ExxonMobil get a tax break while we get stuck paying higher gas prices?
In
recent years, President Obama has proposed a budget that would
eliminate billions in these ridiculous tax breaks for oil giants. Not
surprisingly, the oil industry has been fighting back the only way they
know how: spending money on lobbyists, campaign contributions, and
shadowy outside groups to influence elections.
But Big Oil's party needs to end now.
Momentum
is building for action. Polls consistently show that there is strong
public support for cutting Big Oil's special tax breaks. And our
progressive champions in Congress are ready to put an end to this unfair
practice once and for all. But they need to hear from you if they're
going to make it happen.

The big bank attitude seems to be "Big Bonus for me - the rest of you can go Scrooge Yourselves." Well, we're not going to take it this holiday season.
The
big banks - the ones we bailed out and continue to shield from legal
consequences - are about to give themselves $91.44 Billion in holiday
bonuses. This Christmas we're going to present one simple demand, signed
by thousands of Americans: give that obscene holiday bonus to the
families you made homeless.
How brazen is their greed?
Off the charts. The Financial Times publishes an entire magazine called
“How To Spend It,” for Wall Street megabanksters stressed out about what
to do with their fat bonus checks.
Are
they serious? At a time when record numbers of Americans are dealing
with joblessness created by their financial crash, and homelessness
created by their illegal foreclosures?
Thank you for making this movement real.
