Police Brutality and Civil Unrest in Kiev

December 5, 2013

When my flight from Kiev landed in Moscow this week, Russian customs officials, hearing where I flew in from, said cheerily, “Fresh from the barricades?”

While in Kiev, my colleague and I witnessed first-hand the civil unrest Ukraine is facing. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets after the government’s sudden decision on November 21 to postpone signing the deal on closer ties with the EU.

The authorities allowed mostly peaceful protests to continue for over a week, but when police violently cracked down last weekend, they did so with a ferocity virtually unprecedented in post-Soviet Ukraine. One man I interviewed about the violence in Kiev said bitterly that he fell asleep and woke up in a different country.

We talked to many people who were on Kiev’s Independence Square when riot police suddenly attacked at around 4 a.m. on November 30. They were people of all ages and walks of life, from students to pensioners. All told us they were astonished at the brutality riot police used to disperse the largely peaceful group. Many said they saw policemen beating protesters indiscriminately, chasing people who were trying to escape, hitting and kicking those who fell. We saw videos that confirmed those accounts.

The next day there were clashes between police and a group of violent demonstrators near the presidential administration building. Riot police used excessive force, including tear gas and beatings, including against dozens of peaceful demonstrators. Forty journalists were assaulted and injured, according to the OSCE Representative for Freedom of the Media.

My colleague and I visited a 54-year old woman in a hospital, where her daughter, still in a state of shock, said her mother had been hit in the face with a police truncheon, breaking her nose and causing a concussion and other injuries.

The protests are far from over, with thousands continuing to gather in the streets and the beautiful squares of Kiev. Activists have set up numerous camps with information stands, first aid stations, and soup kitchens. Coffee shops all over the city are offering free hot tea and coffee to protesters who stay on the streets despite the cold. Dozens of medics, doctors and lawyers have volunteered on social network sites to help people who are arrested on injured. read more>>

PRANKTIVISM - Obesity Exchange

I'm Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food, and Cooked. For many years now, I've been passionately outspoken about the food justice movement, and low-wage workers represent a key front in the fight for fair and just food.

That's why I hope you'll join me and millions of MoveOn members across the country in expressing solidarity with the fast-food workers going on strike for fair wages today.

Those of us working in the food movement often speak of our economy's unhealthy reliance on "cheap food." But cheap food only seems cheap because the real costs of its production are hidden from us: the exploitation of food and farm workers, the brutalization of animals, and the undermining of the health of the soil, the water, and the atmosphere.
As a society, we've trapped ourselves in a kind of reverse Fordism. Instead of paying workers well enough so that they can afford good, honestly-priced products—as Henry Ford endeavored to do so that his workers might afford to buy his cars—we pay them so little that the only food they can afford is junk food destructive of their health and the environment's.
If we are ever to right this wrong, to produce food sustainably and justly and sell it at an honest price, we will first have to pay people a living wage so that they can afford to buy it. Let's start with the people who work so hard to feed us.

In solidarity,
Michael Pollan

Microsoft: Anonymous hacktivists DDoSed us? Really?

So Anonymous, we didn't even register their, ahem, 'total domain takedown'

By John Leyden,
Microsoft has denied it was affected in any way by a claimed attack against its systems by elements of the rag-tag hacktivist collective Anonymous.

In a post to Pastebin last week, an individual claiming affiliation to Anonymous boasted that a DDoS attack against Japanese Microsoft (domain) websites and servers on or around 23 November had had a much wider affect than intended.

The poster continued: "We are sorry for any inconvenience We caused you Microsoft..." and claimed that although the Japanese websites had stayed up, many core Microsoft sites - including Hotmail.com, MSN.com, Live.com, Outlook.com and Microsoft.com - were supposedly taken out by the attacks mounted in protest against the culling of dolphins by the Japanese government (dubbed #OpKillingBay).

Many sites on Microsoft's cloud did go down but this happened on 21 November, two days before hacktivists beat a packet to Microsoft's door. In any case, the problems with sites on Microsoft's Azure cloud on 21 November (Xbox One worldwide launch day) have been diagnosed as being the result of a DNS-related issue. Sites most particularly affected included Xbox.com and Outlook.com.

Top comet-watcher pens ISON's emotional obituary

'Born 4.5 Billion BC, Fragmented Nov 28, 2013 (age 4.5-billion yrs old)'

Rik Myslewski, 02 Dec 20:03

Comet ISON 'This is how comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) wished to be remembered,' writes Battams

In Memoriam

Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON)
Born 4.5 Billion BC, Fragmented Nov 28, 2013 (age 4.5-billion yrs old)

Born in a dusty and turbulent environment, comet ISON spent its early years being jostled and struck by siblings both large and small. Surviving a particularly violent first few million years, ISON retreated to the Oort Cloud, where it maintained a largely reclusive existence for nearly four billion years. But around 3-million B.C., a chance encounter with a passing star coerced ISON into undertaking a pioneering career as a Sungrazer. On September 21, 2012, ISON made itself known to us, and allowed us to catalog the most extraordinary part of its spectacular vocational calling.

Never one to follow convention, ISON lived a dynamic and unpredictable life, alternating between periods of quiet reflection and violent outburst. However, its toughened exterior belied a complex and delicate inner working that only now we are just beginning to understand. In late 2013, Comet ISON demonstrated not only its true beauty but a surprising turn of speed as it reached its career defining moment in the inner solar system. Tragically, on November 28, 2013, ISON's tenacious ambition outweighed its ability, and our shining green candle in the solar wind began to burn out.

Survived by approximately several trillion siblings, Comet ISON leaves behind an unprecedented legacy for astronomers, and the eternal gratitude of an enthralled global audience. In ISON's memory, donations are encouraged to your local astronomy club, observatory or charity that supports STEM and science outreach programs for children.

“Earth’s crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God; But only he who sees, takes off his shoes – The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.” – Elizabeth Barrett Browning

There are times, in my books and articles, when I talk about an external control system that many of us are aware of, and others are awakening to. I ask readers to examine how we are socially and culturally conditioned, and programmed by messages that manipulate our emotions and base desires.
The obvious truth is that it benefits the system when we think what we ‘should’ think and do what we ‘should’ do. In fact, our adjustment to the system is so vital to its continued existence that a great deal of effort goes into exerting influence and control over our thoughts and beliefs and behaviors, either by soft suggestion, skilled trickery or hard force.
Now, a benign matrix – which we’ll just visualize as a vast geometric network of self-supporting intersecting energy – might be naturally formed and just a part of 3-D life. That’s not a bad thing. So what is a bad thing? A usurped, corrupted, unnatural, anti-life matrix. If this corrupted network of intersections consumed the vital energy of humans and the earth… well that would be a nightmare that we’d all be wise to wake up to.
We can look back and see times when beauty and virtue and honor were lauded in certain cultures, and we can also look back and see times when an elitist greed, fear and survival-based vampiristic energy took over a network for a long, long time. We’re in one of those dark times now, perhaps the last one of the Age, and we can see it, feel it, know it.
Occasionally I hear from readers that ‘dark times’ talk is too negative, taking away from the peaceful vibe that we all really yearn for, and the happiness that we all wish to feel as we go through the day. Well, I don’t mean to take away from happiness… we’re alive, we’re conscious, we’re connected, we’re creative, we’re so capable of miracles in our ‘spirit dwelling within human’ existence.
To my mind, knowing about the existence of the matrix with countless ties of money/energy flow doesn’t have to be a dark thing. Humans have lived within a system of control for a long, long time. Our ancestors acquiesced to it and/or believed in it. Up until the time when people began to awaken, it successfully controlled, directed and manipulated many aspects of our lives. We can see now… it’s degraded and corrupted to the degree that we can’t acquiesce. Our spirits won’t allow it.
Earlier I stated that the system manipulates our emotions and base desires, and it is essentially vampiristic. So what does it feed on? Obviously our labor and money is consumed, but there is so much more of us that is energy, and useable: our fear of death and suffering, our cultures and religious beliefs, our insecurities, our anger and even our anger directed toward the controlling power, our frustration and capability of violence, our ego’s desire and our competitive aims, our ill health, our laziness, our sexuality, our consumerism, our admiration of ‘success’, our outrage against injustice, and even our hopes.
If the point of our existence is for us as individuals to live a fulfilled life while learning and evolving, then does seeing the matrix and detaching from it matter? I wonder… how could it not matter? We’re dinner… and in order to not be a meal, we need to be conscious of ‘what is’, aware of what we’re projecting, just and humane in our behavior toward each other, wise about places and things that degrade our energy, and able to serve the renewal without anger, outrage or reaction that can be manipulated.
One might think there are plenty of good people serving the system, and we only need to make them aware of the immorality of their actions. But really… when has that ever worked? None of us can stand finger waggers. People have their own measuring stick, and life is very gracious in bringing awareness to the human heart, especially if there is clear and factual information available.
I think most of us are already using our best strategies in lightening up the matrix: 1) the controllers devour profits, and they feast on our degraded energy, so we deny them both as best we can. 2) we remember that they are incredibly interconnected… like a sweater where one string unravels another and that unravels another. Unraveling is happening on quite a few fronts, and who knows, we just may see them turn on each other.

Hey L.,
No GMO salmon
Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, I love a good piece of salmon. There’s nothing better than walking into my mom’s house and smelling her special salmon recipe baking in the oven.
But when I come home for the holidays this year, it could be one of the last times I can count on that salmon being natural and artificial hormone-free.
Right now, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is deciding whether to allow genetically modified (GMO) salmon to enter our food supply. If approved, these “frankenfish” could pose serious risks to our health, our ecosystems, and our wild salmon stocks.
They call them frankenfish for a reason, L..
The company that makes them -- AquaBounty -- is taking Atlantic salmon and splicing them with genes from an eel pout and growth hormone from a Chinook salmon. The result is a salmon that produces growth hormone year-round and grows twice as fast.
They have not been proven safe for us to eat, but they have been shown to be less healthy than other salmon -- producing less of the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids than non-GMO salmon. If we don’t speak out now, the FDA may use one flawed study to approve this fish.
And the worst part is that you won’t be able to shop around the problem. Since we still don’t have GMO labeling in most states, when you go to the grocery store, you won’t be able to tell the difference between these frankenfish and other salmon.
Senators like Oregon’s Jeff Merkley and Alaska’s Mark Begich have been leading the charge to ban these frankenfish. We hope you’ll join them in speaking out now.
One other huge concern is the threat these frankenfish could pose to our wild salmon if they got out of their farms. The GMO salmon consume five times more food than wild salmon, and are more aggressive. Introducing these traits into the wild population could be devastating.
AquaBounty says that these salmon have been engineered so that they wouldn’t reproduce if they did escape. But you’ve seen Jurassic Park right? As Jeff Goldblum’s character put it, “Life finds a way.”
I’m not willing to risk the future of our wild salmon population on the promises of one company. Are you?
If you want to keep our wild salmon protected and our families healthy, please send a message to the FDA today.
Thanks,
Vanessa
