The close relationship between politics and economics is neither neutral nor coincidental. Large governments evolve through history in order to protect large accumulations of property and wealth. M. Parenti

The great fault of all ethics hitherto has been that they
believed themselves to have to deal only with the relations of man to
man. In reality, however, the question is what is his attitude to the
world and all life that comes within his reach. A man is ethical only
when life, as such, is sacred to him, and that of plants and animals as
that of his fellow men, and when he devotes himself helpfully to all
life that is in need of help. Only the universal ethic of the feeling of
responsibility in an ever-widening sphere for all that lives — only
that ethic can be founded in thought. ... The ethic of Reverence for
Life, therefore, comprehends within itself everything that can be
described as love, devotion, and sympathy whether in suffering, joy, or
effort.
Albert Schweitzer

"Thank God that at this hour I am dangerous to the war profiteers of this country who rob the people on the one hand, and rob and debase the government on the other; and then with their pockets and wallets stuffed with the filthy, bloodstained profits of war, wrap the sacred folds of the Stars and Stripes about them and [about] their blatant hypocrisy to the world."    Kate Richards O'Hare's Address To the Court Proceedings on the Sentencing of Mrs. Kate Richards O'Hare by Hon Martin J. Wade, 1 P. M., Friday, Dec 14, 1917.

TPP v. Democracy

The White House and the U.S. Trade Representative are urging Congress to abdicate some of its power over approval of trade agreements by renewing "fast track" authority. Fast track would allow the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership to leapfrog customary legislative protocol and be put to a rapid "up or down" vote without a public hearing or amendments, and with limited floor debate. Forcing Congress to vote on an agreement this complex without adequate time for open hearings, review, and public scrutiny, sets a dangerous precedent. Congress, we urge you: just say NO to fast track!
There's a reason most people haven't heard of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP): for three years, 600 multinational corporations and trade associations have been negotiating this trade pact in secret, which could supersede American laws that protect workers, jobs, health, and the environment.1
Now, corporate Democrats and Republicans have just introduced a bill that would "fast-track" approval of this secret agreement, meaning the TPP would be given an up-or-down vote with little or no debate or chance for public scrutiny.2 Opposing fast track could be our last and best chance to stop a corporate takeover from getting through Congress.
If we don't step up now and tell our members of Congress to oppose this, we could end up getting this trade agreement shoved down our throats, further empowering big business and hurting regular people here and abroad.
MoveOn members have already played a key role in delaying this corporate takeover. Last year, MoveOn members and allies helped get 151 House Democrats to come out against fast-tracking the TPP. 3 Now that fast track has been introduced, those members need encouragement and we need at least 67 more Congresspeople to come out against this
If enough of us cry foul, we can stop this.
Thanks!

There’s a disconnect between what the president and his team say about drones, and what actually happens.
In 2013, the discussion about the Obama administration’s use of drones as weapons of war intensified. Americans became more aware of the practice, and President Obama outlined his vision of counterterrorism efforts, and how the use of these unmanned bombers fit into that vision. The upshot is that the administration continues to deploy drone strikes as its main counterterrorism strategy, ignoring both the high rate of civilian casualties associated with these attacks, and the high cost to U.S. taxpayers.
Take a look back at some of the statements the Obama administration made about drones in 2013, and you'll see there’s a disconnect between what is said and what actually happens, as this brief timeline will show. Drone policy and reality are not the same. Increasingly, progressives want to know what they can do to reduce or do away with this weapon of mass destruction in 2014.

A look at the top richest lawmakers in Congress' 'Millionaire's Club'

I can't believe it either, but it's true:
Wall Street banks decided to give themselves a $91 Billion bonus for their criminal work in 2013 - but that money is largely being given out now for tax purposes.1
That means we still have time to make it even more politically precarious for the same banks that cry poor come bailout time.
Our petition to the banks has already received coverage in the Guardian, Democracy Now and the Huffington Post. We have a very special in-person delivery planned for tomorrow - can you help us get to 60,000 signatures by the end of today?:
Thank you for all you do to make this movement real.

 - One billion people in the world are victims of hunger. Two billion are victims of diseases related to food that is nutritionally imbalanced and deficient.

The problem of hunger and malnutrition are rooted in an obsolete and destructive food and agriculture system that is blind to the need for diversity, quality and nutrition of food for a balanced diet. The reductionist mechanistic paradigm that I have called the Monoculture of the Mind promotes Monocultures, and only focuses on the yield of  a few commodities. As a result of this Monoculture model, the human diet has been reduced from the diversity of nearly 8500 species providing a diversity of nutrients that the human body needs, to just 8 crops, largely producing carbohydrates.

Not only are these monocultures of carbohydrate rich crops deficient in most essential micronutrients, through industrial breeding they are introducing new deficiencies that are leading to killer diseases.
