"The most shocking fact about war is that its victims and its instruments are individual human beings, and that these individual beings are condemned by the monstrous conventions of politics to murder or be murdered in quarrels not their own" Aldous Huxley - English novelist and critic, 1894-1963
"I count myself as a spiritual sister to those the US government has murdered, and I am angry at my powerlessness." - Karen Kwiatkowski
"The search for the truth is the noblest occupation of man; its publication is a duty." - Anne Louise Germaine de Stael
"My own concern is primarily the terror and violence carried out by my own state, for two reasons. For one thing, because it happens to be the larger component of international violence. But also for a much more important reason than that; namely, I can do something about it. So even if the U.S. was responsible for 2 percent of the violence in the world instead of the majority of it, it would be that 2 percent I would be primarily responsible for. And that is a simple ethical judgment. That is, the ethical value of one's actions depends on their anticipated and predictable consequences. It is very easy to denounce the atrocities of someone else. That has about as much ethical value as denouncing atrocities that took place in the 18th century." - Noam Chomsky

Trans-Atlantic 'No-Spy' Deal on the Rocks
Last summer, German Chancellor Angela Merkel promised her
citizens a pact which would prohibit US spying on German citizens. But
since then, Washington has shown little interest in pursuing such a
treaty. Now, officials in Germany fear the deal is dead.

A coalition of privacy and digital-rights organizations is planning a mass online protest against NSA surveillance February 11. But as the DC Circuit Court of Appeals strikes down net-neutrality provisions, the protest follows a critical moment for internet freedom.
As President Obama is set to issue new guidelines Friday for his plans to rein in some of the National Security Agency's (NSA) vast dragnet surveillance programs revealed by former NSA contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowden, a broad coalition of privacy and digital rights organizations is gearing up for a mass online action planned this Febrary 11 to protest ubiquitous electronic surveillance by several governments.
The planned action is reminiscent of the successful internet blackout, which protested the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) bills in 2012, which would have given law enforcement the authority to block web pages containing copyright infringement violations.

4 Reasons To Hold George W. Bush Accountable For War Crimes
Leaked TPP Document Reveals No Regard for Environment in trade agreement
Tragically,
however, this new corporate "free" trade deal is a top priority for the
White House and most Republicans. But here’s the thing: In order to
pass the TPP, its supporters first need to pass "fast-track" authority
that would bypass the normal legislative process.
"Fast-track"
authority is an anti-democratic ruse to allow corporate interests to
write their own laws with nearly no input from our elected
representatives. And it’s the only way a new, jobs-killing trade
agreement can pass, because pro-jobs Democrats in Congress would never
let such a corporate giveaway survive to see the light of day.
Join progressives fighting to stop "fast-track" authority for the TPP trade deal today.
Congress
has a fundamental responsibility to oversee massive agreements like the
TPP -- but "fast-track" authority would essentially turn pro-jobs
representatives into a rubber stamp for this corporate giveaway: no
meaningful hearings, no amendments, and almost no debate on a massive
unjust trade deal that’s bigger than NAFTA and promises to do just as
much damage to hardworking Americans.
A significant number of House Democrats are appalled by this, and they know that the progressive movement is stronger than ever.
But
the White House, corporate lobbyists, and Wall Street are all upping
the pressure to pass "fast-track" now to pave the way for the TPP to
pass without oversight of all its corporate giveaways.
Congress needs to hear from progressives now, so they know we’re holding them accountable to working people.
Why
is it that, time and time again, it’s our working men and women who get
punished, squeezed, and ignored by our elected officials? We’ve seen
how corporate-backed trade deals like NAFTA devastated our middle class
and sent good, family-supporting jobs overseas. Enough. We won’t let
corporate interests grease the skids for the biggest jobs-killing "free"
trade agreement yet.

- Do you remember the 2011 lawsuit from the Organic Seed Growers and
Trade Association 80+ plaintiffs (farmers and small businesses) against
Monsanto? They were fighting biotech giant Monsanto's ability to sue
them for patent infringement when genetically modified seeds
inadvertently appear in organic/conventional fields.
Yes, were talking about the wind or insects carrying GM seeds onto another farm, which to them is considered contamination. But instead of the ability for the farmers to sue for a ruined field, they can be cleaned out in court for not having permission to plant patented seeds.

Monsanto
workers have been found trespassing and gathering evidence on farmers'
properties. The lawsuit had sought protection from this overreach, as
Monsanto has filed 140 of these suits and settled 700 without suing.

Dear friends,
A terrible massacre is underway in the heart of Africa — with women being raped, children found beheaded and thousands dead already. But now we have a rare and real opportunity to end the bloodshed. In the Central African Republic, rebel groups are butchering the innocent. The forces fighting them are overmatched and France described CAR as being “on the verge of genocide.” But there’s hope -- the European Union’s top diplomat just proposed sending in peacekeeping forces, and if Europe acts now, it could mean the difference between stability and more slaughter.
In days, EU Ministers will meet to decide on the proposal, but some are still on the fence -- let’s demand action! When 1 million sign we’ll launch a media blitz around the meeting in Brussels and make our voices heard to save lives. Sign now and share with everyone:

It all started when rebel groups staged a coup and started massacring innocent civilians. Then “self-defense” militias orchestrated a series of revenge killings of the most brutal nature. The tit-for-tat brutality spiraled out of control, forcing 1 million civilians to flee for their lives. The killing rose to almost 100 a day in the capital.
Some French and African Union troops are working to try and stop the bloodbath, but they’re simply outnumbered and the country is teetering on a knife’s edge. Most families are too scared to return home -- fearful they’ll be attacked and killed, but peacekeeping reinforcements would help ensure their safety.
The EU’s top diplomat Catherine Ashton just made a proposal to send in troops and France is pushing hard for a stronger peacekeeping presence. Let’s use this moment to force our leaders into action and help spark a lasting peace in the Central African Republic. Sign here:

Central African Republic: Where have all the people gone? (BBC)

Of what consequence to you, reader, is my obscure individuality?
I live, like you, in a century in which reason submits only to fact and to evidence. My name, like yours, is truth-seeker. My mission is written in these words of the law: Speak without hatred and without fear; tell that which thou knowest.
--Pierre-Joseph Proudhon
Edward Snowden exposed the mind-boggling and illegal level of surveillance the US government is conducting on, well, all of us. His welcome in Russia runs out soon, and he's got nowhere to go. But Brazilian President Dilma is angry at US surveillance and experts say she might brave massive US pressure to consider asylum for Snowden!
This is about much more than one man. If Snowden's act of truth-telling leads to crippling punishment, it sends the wrong signal to abusive governments and whistleblowers everywhere. If 1 million of us take action now, we can send President Dilma the largest citizen-supported asylum bid in history -- click below to safeguard Snowden and defend democracy everywhere:

Time is running out on Snowden’s one-year visa. Sharks are circling to drag him back to the US where he is unlikely to face a fair trial, but Brazil’s president Dilma hates mega spy program PRISM, has cancelled a state visit to the US over the issue, and is working to safeguard her people from spying. If she’s to support Snowden, Dilma needs to know she can withstand tough US pressure.
Opponents of giving Snowden asylum say he broke the law and put global security at risk. Some even call him a traitor, and say letting him get away with it could open the floodgates for others. But while Snowden did break the law -- he did so to reveal a massive system of illegal global spying on an industrial scale. Snowden's heroic action can make the world a better and safer place for everyone. And Snowden isn’t just any whistleblower; his revelations have already changed the world for the better. Germany and Brazil have moved to reform privacy protections for citizens. The issue has been addressed openly in the United Nations, and a US court has ruled some forms of NSA spying are illegal. This week US President Obama is going to change the spy practices of the NSA, in reaction to Snowden’s leaks!
President Dilma needs our support to stand up to US pressure. Let’s show her that the world’s people will stand with Brazil if Brazil stands for bravery. Join the world’s biggest asylum request ever, for Snowden:

With more than 30 million members around the world -- including 6 million in Brazil -- together we have already been key to protecting our internet from government gag laws. Now we can support the man who has sacrificed so much to protect us from a massive international spy scandal.
With hope and determination,
Joseph, Christoph, Michael, Sayeeda, Ricken and the whole Avaaz Team
