"Excessive
partiality for one foreign nation, and excessive dislike of another,
cause those whom they actuate to see danger only on one side, and serve
to veil and even second the arts of influence on the other.
Real
patriots, who may resist the intrigues of the favorite, are liable to
become suspected and odious; while its tools and dupes usurp the
applause and confidence of the people, to surrender their interests." - George Washington (1732-1799) Founding Father, 1st US President
"The
voice of protest, of warning, of appeal is never more needed than when
the clamor of fife and drum, echoed by the press and too often by the
pulpit, is bidding all men fall in and keep step and obey in silence the tyrannous word of command. Then, more than ever, it is the duty of the good citizen not to be silent." - Charles Eliot Norton - (1827-1908) American scholar
"Whenever
a people... entrust the defence of their country to a regular,
standing army, composed of mercenaries, the power of that country will
remain under the direction of the most wealthy citizens." - A Framer - Anonymous 'framer' of the US Constitution - Source: Independent Gazetteer, January 29, 1791
"It
should be no surprise that when rich men take control of the
government, they pass laws that are favorable to themselves. The
surprise is that those who are not rich vote for such people, even
though they should know from bitter experience
that the rich will continue to rip off the rest of us. Perhaps the
reason is that rich men are very clever at covering up what they do." - Andrew Greeley (Chicago Sun-Times, February 18, 2001)
"In
this America people are poor by the millions. They find themselves
perishing on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of
material prosperity." - Dr. Martin Luther King - The Other America - 14 April 1967 -
