Friends,
Did you see this headline yesterday? On the economy, Obama says, ‘Washington has taken its eye off the ball’.
When in the past couple of decades, I would ask, has Washington had its eye ON the ball?
While
President Obama was trying to make a case that Congress has been too
busy obsessing on “scandals” to focus on the economy, he managed to come
up with the understatement of the year. (I
would also point out that IRS targeting and NSA surveillance are not
“scandals”. Much worse, they are policies made possible by laws such as
the Patriot Act and a tax code written by special interest lobbyists. I
would also suggest that serious threats to civil liberties and abuses
of government force are not trivial matters.)
That
said, President Obama inadvertently made a good point. The politicians
in Washington like nothing better than distractions from the fact that,
if the deficit spending, the printing of money and the growth of
government aren’t stopped, most other issues may become irrelevant.
They
would like nothing better than for us to overlook the reality that the
only good thing Congress and the President have done for the economy in
recent history is to do NOTHING. That’s right. The inaction that led to
“sequestration” and its very slight reduction in spending growth has
actually reduced this year’s deficit somewhat. Imagine that. Restrain spending...and the deficit becomes smaller.
Ironic,
isn’t it? Congress and the President NEVER intended for the budget
sequestration to actually happen. It was a gimmick designed solely to
“kick the can down the road.” But then, they couldn’t figure out how to
avoid it, so it happened. Make no mistake, it was a lousy way to do a
good thing, and it has been managed for purely political purposes, as in
shutting down White House tours while jetting around the world in Air Force One at a cost of $179,750 per hour. However, it has proven a point, and the politicians would prefer we not notice.
The bad news for those politicians: The Our America Initiative fully intends to make sure people DO notice. One
of our highest priority projects in the coming months -- as Congress
deals with the budget and spending deadlines -- is to highlight just how
easy it is to reduce federal spending with just a little common sense. If you would like to help, go to www.OurAmericaInitiative.com and support our effort.
Just
this week, I pointed out that 15 of the highest level positions at the
Department of Homeland Security are vacant -- and nobody outside of
Washington, DC, has even noticed. DHS
is little more than an unnecessary bureaucratic layer built in the
aftermath of 9/11 that has served little purpose other than clogging up
airports and overseeing some of the most harmful attacks on privacy and
civil liberties in a generation. Shut it down. Save the money, and Americans will be just as safe -- and maybe have a little more liberty.
That is only one example of what we can do to eliminate deficits and actually make government smaller. I did it as Governor, and there is no reason it can’t be done in Washington -- if the American people demand it.
Identifying the cuts and proposing common sense ways to shrink government are easy. The hard part is reaching and mobilizing enough people to make the politicians sweat. To do that, we need your help -- and your financial support, large or small.
Please go to www.OurAmericaInitiative.com today
and make a contribution that will empower Our America to be the voice
for economic and personal freedom that people all across the country are
seeking.
For too long, Washington has been buying votes with bigger government. Let’s show them how to buy votes with more liberty.
Thank you. Your support and friendship mean a great deal to me.
Governor Gary Johnson
Honorary Chairman
