Amnesty International UK 2013 mustn't be another year of bloodshed. Demand protection of civilians in Syria. As we near the end of 2012, human rights abuses by both pro- and anti- government forces in Syria are spiralling. We have the names of nearly 30,000 people who have died so far, and believe the true death toll is far greater. This simply can't be allowed to go on. With an opposition leadership beginning to organise itself, there is now a real opportunity to help prevent future  abuses. We must also renew our call on the Syrian government  to end attacks on Syria’s long-suffering civilians.

Dear Larry, Throughout 2012, our courageous researchers have brought back stories from the midst of the conflict in Syria. Stories of family homes razed to the ground and peaceful protesters tortured. On our latest mission, we heard of civilians killed at a wedding party in the Jabal al-Zawiya region on 16 September, and a six year old boy who died as he queued for bread. Meanwhile, over 500,000 refugees have poured across Syria’s borders. Two million more who have fled their homes due to the fighting are living in desperate conditions within the country. 2013 mustn't be another year of bloodshed – demand human rights in Syria End abuses by pro-government forces... Since the crackdown on peaceful protest began in Spring 2011, President Bashar al-Assad’s security forces and pro-government militias have been responsible for the majority of the atrocities. With your support, we have continued to document the harrowing details of these abuses and used this evidence to put pressure on the United Nations Security Council to take action which will ensure future accountability. We have called on Russia and other countries to halt the flow of arms to the Syrian government. We have continued to work with some of the bravest activists in the world to prepare the ground for a future Syria which does respect human rights. And you have added your voices, making our calls louder still - we know from conversations behind the scenes that your voices are being heard so please raise them once again to call on both parties to respect human rights. Demand the immediate protection of civilians in Syria ...And opposition fighters too Recently, as the internal armed conflict escalates, we have seen a rise in abuses carried out by opposition forces – whether fighting under the banner of the Free Syrian Army or not. However, as of last month, the Syrian opposition has established a new leadership, the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition forces.  Right now is a crucial moment to bring these forces under effective command and control to prevent future human rights abuses.    Call on all parties to respect human rights and protect civilians Thank you again for all your support for our work on Syria throughout the year. Together let’s continue to work for an end to the bloodshed, to hold those who dare to commit war crimes to account and to help build a future Syria which prioritises the human rights of all its people.
