“Too weird to live, too rare to die!” .......GONZO!!..Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

The idea of global unity is not new, but the absolute
necessity of it has only just arrived, like a sudden radical alteration
of the sun, and we shall have to adapt or disappear. If the nations are
ever to make a working synthesis of their ferocious contradictions, the
plan will be created in spirit before it can be formulated or accepted
in political fact. And it is in poetry that we can refresh our hope that
such a unity is occupying people's imaginations everywhere, since poetry
is the voice of spirit and imagination and all that is potential, as
well as of the healing benevolence that used to be the privilege of the
gods.

Americans try to stop Israeli ship docking
Middle East Monitor
In another sign of the increasing support for the international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, activists in the state of California, on the Western coast of the US, successfully prevented an Israeli cargo ship from docking on Saturday.
The move comes amidst Israel's month-long military campaign against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which has so far killed almost 2,000 Palestinians and wounded thousands more, mostly civilians. During this time, activists have been regularly staging protests in San Francisco, California against Israel's aggression, attracting thousands of participants.
According to Dr Paul Larudee, a co-founder of the Free Palestine movement, thousands of activists waving Palestinian flags turned out to blockade the Israeli cargo ship Ever Lasting, which pulled into a harbour in the San Francisco Bay on Saturday morning.

The protesters intended to form a picket line to prevent work crews from unloading the ship, responding to the Palestinian General Federation Trade Union's BDS call for workers around the world to refuse to handle Israeli goods. "The Ever Lasting and its sister ship ZIM Piraeus were both due to be unloaded that day," Dr Larudee told MEMO.
"As it approached the docks, however, the Ever Lasting was ordered by the port authority to return to the entrance and moor to the side until further notice. In the meantime, the ZIM Piraeus had been treading water off the coast of Monterey since the previous evening."
He added that, "The reaction of the port authority and the decision to delay the arrival of one of the ships was apparently due to the knowledge that the dock workers were going to respect the picket line of the demonstrators."
Although Washington remains Israel's strongest ally, the latest massacre in Gaza has mobilised tens of thousands of Americans, who have taken to the streets across the country to demand an end to Israel's aggression and occupation of Palestine.

We know from [Caesar's journals] that Caesar is not taking this lightly. He knows that if he marches on Rome with his armies, then he is a public enemy, and that he will either have to win, or die. For a Roman patrician like Julius Caesar there is no life without military service; there is no life without service to the state. He cannot simply 'go native' and stay in Gaul, and he does realise that if he goes back to Rome, he would be killed. At this time the northernmost border of the Roman territory in Italy is the River Rubicon. Once someone crosses the River Rubicon, he's in Roman territory. A general must not cross that boundary with his army - he must do what the Romans call lay down his command, which means surrender his right to order troops, and certainly not be carrying weapons. Caesar and his armies hesitate quite awhile at this river while Caesar decides what to do, and Caesar tells us that he informs his soldiers that it's a little tiny bridge across the river, but once they cross it they'll have to fight their way all the way to Rome, and Caesar is well aware that he's risking not just his own life, but those of his loyal soldiers, and he might not win. Pompey is a formidable enemy. It's also impossible to avoid the fact that Caesar was attacking the state, and as a patrician Roman this would have been very difficult for him, equivalent to beating up your father. He wouldn't have done any of this lightly. Finally he makes a decision, it's time to go, and he uses a gambling metaphor: he says 'Roll the dice', 'Alea jacta est' Once the dice start rolling they cannot be controlled, even though we don't know what it is as the dice roll and tumble. Julius and his men swiftly cross the river and they march double time toward Rome, where they almost beat the messengers sent to inform the Senate of their arrival.....

if this be treason then let's make the most of it

Johnny’s in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I’m on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he’s got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
Look out kid
It’s somethin’ you did
God knows when
But you’re doin’ it again
You better duck down the alley way
Lookin’ for a new friend
The man in the coon-skin cap
By the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
You only got ten

Maggie comes fleet foot
Face full of black soot
Talkin’ that the heat put
Plants in the bed but
The phone’s tapped anyway
Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early May
Orders from the D.A.
Look out kid
Don’t matter what you did
Walk on your tiptoes
Don’t try “No-Doz”
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes

You don’t need a weatherman
To know which way the wind blows
Get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin’ to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
Look out kid
You’re gonna get hit
But users, cheaters
Six-time losers
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin’ for a new fool
Don’t follow leaders
Watch the parkin’ meters

Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
Get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Don’t steal, don’t lift
Twenty years of schoolin’
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don’t wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don’t wanna be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don’t work
’Cause the vandals took the handles

The Holy Thing is here again
Among us, brother, fast thou too and pray,
And tell thy brother knights to fast and pray,
That so perchance the vision may be seen
By thee and those, and all the world be healed.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson
  Idylls of the King

“Admit it. You aren’t like them. You’re not even close. You may occasionally dress yourself up as one of them, watch the same mindless television shows as they do, maybe even eat the same fast food sometimes. But it seems that the more you try to fit in, the more you feel like an outsider, watching the “normal people” as they go about their automatic existences. For every time you say club passwords like “Have a nice day” and “Weather’s awful today, eh?”, you yearn inside to say forbidden things like “Tell me something that makes you cry” or “What do you think deja vu is for?”. Face it, you even want to talk to that girl in the elevator. But what if that girl in the elevator (and the balding man who walks past your cubicle at work) are thinking the same thing? Who knows what you might learn from taking a chance on conversation with a stranger? Everyone carries a piece of the puzzle. Nobody comes into your life by mere coincidence. Trust your instincts. Do the unexpected. Find the others…”

If you’re rooting for Israel, you might have seen videos of rocket launches by Hamas adjacent to Shifa Hospital. Alternatively, if you’re pro-Palestinian, you might have seen the following report on an alleged IDF sniper who admitted on Instagram to murdering 13 Gazan children.
While war rages on the ground in Gaza and across Israeli skies, there’s an all-out information war unraveling in social networked spaces.

Israelis and their proponents are likely to see IDF videos such as this one detailing arms and tunnels found within mosques passed around in their social media feeds, while Palestinian groups are likely to pass around images displaying the sheer destruction caused by IDF forces to Gazan mosques. One side sees videos of rockets intercepted in the Tel-Aviv skies, and other sees the lethal aftermath of a missile attack on a Gazan neighborhood.

The better we get at modeling user preferences, the more accurately we construct recommendation engines that fully capture user attention. In a way, we are building personalized propaganda engines that feeds users content which makes them feel good and throws away the uncomfortable bits.

We used to be able to hold media accountable for misinforming the public. Now we only have ourselves to blame.

Personalizing propaganda

Not only is there much more media produced, but it is coming at us at a faster pace, from many more sources. As we construct our online profiles based on what we already know, what we’re interested in, and what we’re recommended, social networks are perfectly designed to reinforce our existing beliefs. Personalized spaces, optimized for engagement, prioritize content that is likely to generate more traffic; the more we click, share, like, the higher engagement tracked on the service.

Content that makes us uncomfortable, is filtered out.

The founder of Avaaz.org and Chief Executive of Upworthy Eli Pariser warned in his TED talk about the Filter Bubble:
In a broadcast society, there were gatekeepers, the editors, and they controlled the flows of information. Along came the Internet and it swept them out of the way, and it allowed all of us to connect together, and it was awesome. But that’s not actually what’s happening right now. read more

 - The treatment for Ebola, along with accompanying MOA (Method Of Action) has been sent to Jim Stone's web site by an anonymous doctor who has worked with Ebola.

Consider this: The elite would never release a plague without an easy cure, and along with this Ebola outbreak, an American bio-warfare firm has been working in Sierra Leon for the last five years. Sierra Leon has actually identified them as the perpetrators of this outbreak and kicked them out of the country. There is absolutely no doubt this outbreak was intentionally caused by the U.S. war department.

And if it is intentional, a cure is known. There would simply be no other way to do business.

Here is the treatment, complete with MOA. This is a treatment and not a cure. The immune system wipes out the virus, and the treatment gives the immune system time to do it. Here is what Ebola does that is fatal: It causes the complete removal of all vitamin C from the body. read

Our massive day of climate action on September 21 can show a groundswell of demand to the world’s most powerful leaders. If we can make our passion infectious. Help create a viral video tool that can motivate hundreds of thousands into the streets.

JOIN IN
We're 46 days away from the largest climate mobilisation the world has ever seen. Our massive climate day of action already has 350,000 Avaazers committed to taking part. This is huge, but it's not yet enough. We need more buzz and more people to ensure world leaders see that the demand for climate action has hit a tipping point. And we have just the plan to make that happen.

We can make our passion infectious, to motivate people with what’s worth saving from climate change and worth getting out in the streets to stand up for. There's an all star video crew standing by to turn this powerful story about all the things worth saving from the impacts of climate change into an amazing viral video that we can use as an organizing tool to get even more people inspired to join us in this historic day of climate action.

All we need is all of us. This powerful video requires real, inspiring moments from people around the world. And there’s no group better to provide footage for this than us. We’re spread across every corner of the globe, and we demonstrate every day that there is beauty and hope even as we work to create the more just world we want. So take a few minutes to think about what you feel is #worthsaving from climate change and why you are called to stand up in this global day of action. Then click the link below and share your short clip to be included in the #worthsaving climate video:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/worthsaving2l/?binitdb&v=43537

Here are the basic steps to share your video clip:

1. Find an old video clip that you love or shoot a new one. You don’t have to film anything new if you already have something. You don't need to edit, narrate, or add any fancy visuals (though if you want to you should!). We’re looking for real moments that show the beauty and power of humanity. A moment that moves you will move others.   2. Upload your video to YouTube (info here on how to do this) 3. Email worthsaving@avaaz.org with the YouTube link to your video

Recently, President Obama told the New York Times that when it comes to climate change: “‘With public opinion there’s nothing I cannot do, and without public opinion there’s nothing I can get done.” Our political representatives across the globe are not yet convinced that  enough people are concerned about climate change. This massive day of climate action on September 21 is one of our best opportunities to show the world’s most powerful leaders that the public stands with them for ambitious climate action. For that, we need the climate movement to have a growth spurt. We need more people than ever before to demonstrate the rising tide of demand for action.

Polls show that most people believe climate change is a serious threat, but our politicians have yet to feel the heat from a people’s movement that will force them to act. This video will be a central part of a global media strategy including massive subway ads, online ads, celebrity engagement and media partnerships to help inspire everyone to march on September 21st and begin the momentum for major shifts in how our leaders protect our planet.

Help show people what this fight is really about and take some time to submit a short video clip about what in your life is #worthsaving from climate change. All the information to get started is in the link below:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/worthsaving2l/?binitdb&v=43537

Avaaz was started on the belief that people are the superpower that makes change possible. Ordinary people sharing their dreams, their fury, their bold acts is what has always moved others to action. Together, we can make something that touches and inspires others to do more than they ever have before.

With hope,

Nell, Joseph, Iain, Nataliya, Ricken and the whole Avaaz team

Earlier this year, you responded to a MoveOn member survey identifying yourself as an active duty servicemember or a veteran. As such, you bring valuable insights to the public debate on matters of war and peace—including the possibility of further U.S. military escalation in Iraq.

The troubling reality is that more than 800 American military personnel have already been deployed to Iraq, increasing the chance of our country getting dragged into a new war.1 With violence raging in the Middle East and around the world, we can't risk further U.S. military entanglement in Iraq.

But with enough constituents speaking up, this steady drip of military escalation can be stopped—and Congress is listening. Right before August, with an overwhelming, bipartisan 370-40 vote, the House passed a resolution sending a strong message against another Iraq war.2

To keep this powerful momentum going, will you write to your local newspaper opposing U.S. military involvement in Iraq?

This letter-writing effort is the latest in the campaign to stop another Iraq war: we'll flood local newspapers in communities across America with letters-to-the-editor and opinion pieces featuring the voices of servicemembers, veterans, and their families. It's especially important for MoveOn members like to you to weigh in with local newspapers now while Congressional lawmakers are back home for the August recess—and before the situation in Iraq explodes back onto the front page headlines.

Here's how to participate:

This summer alone, MoveOn members like you have already made more than 15,000 phone calls to members of Congress, opposing military escalation in Iraq. Nearly 80,000 MoveOn members have already added their signature opposing war in Iraq to the petition started by MoveOn member and Iraq veteran Matthew Hoh.

Now we want to make sure Congressional lawmakers see that real people are behind the outpouring of opposition—the constituents they're supposed to represent.

Thanks for all you do.

A pot legalization initiative in D.C. gathered twice the number of required signatures.

Despite Congress’ wishes, the residents of the nation’s capital already decriminalized marijuana, treating small amounts of possession similar to a parking violation with a fine. Now the District may be about to follow Colorado and Washington state and legalize it altogether.

More than 57,000  DC voters, organized by the lobby group DC Cannabis, signed a petition to get a pot legalization initiative (Initiative 71) onto the upcoming ballot. That’s more than double the number of signatures required, so today the DC Board of Elections ruled that the initiative is valid and will appear on the November ballot.

It has a good chance of passing, since polls show more than 60 percent of DC voters in favor of legalization.

As with alcohol, the new law would allow adults 21 and over to use marijuana. It would also allow those adults to possess up to two ounces of marijuana and cultivate a maximum of six marijuana plants—though only three of those plants can be fully mature.

Unlike alcohol (and unlike pot in WA and CO), the current initiative fails to address how DC would tax and regulate the newly legal substance. So, the DC Council is considering a second bill that would tax and regulate the sale of marijuana.read
