Koch carbon pollution2
Don’t let big polluters and their congressional cronies stop us when we’re so close to a win.

If the fight to curb global warming were a baseball game, President Obama and EPA would be about to strike out one of dirty energy’s heavy-hitters.

Today, the Obama Administration announced a standard that will cut down carbon pollution from every future power plant in America. This is a game changer for climate change because power plants are our single largest source of carbon pollution.

But corporate polluters and their allies in Congress are determined to block this critical step. So we have to come out swinging right now.

You know how we can tell this is going to be a tough fight? Dirty Coal’s congressional lackeys already started attacking the EPA for this new clean air standard before they even saw it.

At a hearing on climate change in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy faced a crowd of climate change-denying congressmen who used all kinds of crazy arguments to try and prove why we shouldn’t tell Dirty Coal to clean up their act.

One climate change denier blamed carbon emissions from natural sources -- like plants and oceans -- to argue that human activity isn’t the problem. While another congressman just flat-out claimed that the earth isn’t warming.

Then yesterday, Senator Mitch McConnell tried to force a vote on a bill blocking the EPA from limiting carbon pollution from power plants.

Obviously, polluters and their allies will stop at nothing to delay, weaken and block the EPA from acting on climate change. That’s why we need your help to flood the EPA with positive comments to make sure this climate action on new power plants goes into effect as soon as possible.

The facts are clear: unlimited carbon pollution from power plants is a key contributor to climate change, which is fueling more frequent extreme weather events and more asthma attacks. But if LCV supporters like you stand up and demand the strongest possible climate change safeguards, we can ensure a cleaner, healthier future for everyone.
By submitting a public comment to the EPA today, your voice will be part of the official record. Don’t miss the chance to help make a historic impact on the fight for our planet’s future -- submit your public comment in support of this critical climate change action here.
Thanks

I often speak about the nation’s “unsustainable debt”.  That isn’t just a phrase; it’s a reality that the politicians in Washington simply refuse to face.
If we needed proof, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office this week released a report that described the growing national debt in precisely those terms.

CBO said, “President Obama and lawmakers have been cutting the wrong kind of federal spending as they try to avoid the unsustainable buildup of debt that is projected in the coming decades.”
While CBO puts it a bit more politely, what they really said is that Obama and Congress are nibbling around the edges with temporary sequestrations and “cuts” in programs while refusing to do anything about the real causes of a debt that is on the verge of hitting $17 Trillion
Those real causes, of course, are Medicare and other “nondiscretionary” expenditures that are literally consuming the private economy.
So what are the President and Congress doing?

They are taking to the airwaves for  “made for TV” political posturing about raising the debt ceiling and playing chicken with threats to shut the government down at the end of the month.

Nowhere in all this drama are any real efforts to reduce the size of the government -- and therefore its cost...or any mention of the entitlements that are the true drivers of that “unsustainable” debt.
Instead, we are getting the same old song:  We aren’t going to touch Medicare or Social Security, and we aren’t really going to cut defense spending, but we HAVE to get the budget and deficits under control.  Friends, it can’t be done!  You know it, I know it, and the American people know it.
We have to call them out.  Republicans and Democrats alike.  We have to say, “Quit playing games with our financial future. Quit pretending you are doing something when you aren’t.  And take a break from the Fox News and MSNBC appearances and get to work.
Calling the politicians out is up to us.  It is up to the Our America Initiative to be a powerful voice -- and it is up to liberty-minded supporters such as you to make that voice heard.

Your contribution at OurAmericaInitiative.com  today makes it possible to reach more and more people via the Internet and the media, and mobilize those Americans to put the heat on Washington, DC.
I less than two weeks, Congress and the President will make some kind of deal to avoid another budget “crisis”.  Of course, that deal -- whatever it is -- will actually do nothing about the real crisis. It will just put the hard work off to another day, and our financial security will just keep disappearing.
We can’t let them get by with another back room deal that risks our economic freedom.  Go to OurAmericaInitiative.com and help us call them out.
It’s important.
Thanks, as always, for your generous support of liberty -- and for joining me in this fight for America’s future.

On 5-Year Anniversary Of Mortgage Meltdown, Those Responsible Are Doing Just Fine

Don't worry about former Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis, because he probably doesn't worry about you.
Don’t worry about former Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis, because he probably doesn’t worry about you.
On Sept. 15, 2008, Lehman Brothers became the largest bankruptcy filing in the history of this country. It was the first domino of many to fall, followed by the likes of Bear Stearns, Merrill Lynch, Countrywide, Wachovia, Washington Mutual, and many other banks and investment firms that had bet too much money on the subprime mortgage market, only to have it collapse when people realized many of those bad loans would never be repaid. These events ripped apart the American economy and left people out of work for extended periods of time. But not most of the bankers responsible for the mess.

In honor of the five-year anniversary of the Lehman disaster, the Center for Public Integrity has been publishing a series all week called “After the Meltdown,” which includes some follow-up looks at how various executives at failed banks and subprime lenders have survived in the post-bubble world.

First up is this rundown of CEOs at failed and bailed-out banks, former Lehman CEO Richard Fuld, who walked away from the largest bankruptcy in history with several hundred million dollars in his pocket (not literally in his pockets; no one has pants that baggy). He’s got home in Connecticut, Florida, and Idaho, and he’s now running his own consulting firm, Matrix Advisors, presumably because he’s a massive Keanu Reeves fan. Read More

4 Practical Philosophies That Will Empower You

philosophies

Philosophy is a fascinating branch of wisdom. However these esoteric ideas are sometimes difficult to translate into practical application. What are all of those thoughts, suppositions and theories actually good for? How can an understanding of philosophy ultimately help you lead a better life?

Today I want to examine with you four philosophical ideas that have influenced my life in a very positive way. With the right twists I’ll be able to show you that they are indeed empowering. Let’s go!

1) Friedrich Nietzsche – Eternal Recurrence

The Idea

Several times throughout his works, Nietzsche talks about the thought experiment of eternal recurrence. Aphorism 341 of The Gay Science goes like this:
What, if some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: “This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more; and there will be nothing new in it, but every pain and every joy and every thought and sigh and everything unutterably small or great in your life will have to return to you, all in the same succession and sequence—even this spider and this moonlight between the trees, and even this moment and I myself. The eternal hourglass of existence is turned upside down again and again, and you with it, speck of dust!

Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once experienced a tremendous moment when you would have answered him: “You are a god and never have I heard anything more divine.” If this thought gained possession of you, it would change you as you are or perhaps crush you. The question in each and every thing, “Do you desire this once more and innumerable times more?” would lie upon your actions as the greatest weight. Or how well disposed would you have to become to yourself and to life to crave nothing more fervently than this ultimate eternal confirmation and seal?”
Does the idea of eternal recurrence – that every moment of your life will repeat itself into eternity – leave you shivering with fear or with joy; whether you are living life fully everyday or just waiting for better times to come.

Let us take a look at the possible consequences of Nietzsche’s idea.

Heaven or hell, you decide

Let’s also assume that the life you are currently living is not simply one of the repetitions but is actually your first time around. This means that every moment that passes will be set in stone and repeat itself eternally. How does that sound to you?

If you are a ‘common man’, Nietzsche predicted that this would be the heaviest possible burden. On the other hand, be believed human greatness is achieved when you don’t want anything to be different, past, present or future. When you accept and love the present moment, you have won.

Practically speaking, Nietzsche is then suggesting that you choose the best action at every moment and always ask yourself whether what you are doing right now really is the best you could be doing. If you follow his advice and always act according to this knowledge, I’ll bet that you will have a life worth reliving.

2) Socrates – No One Does Wrong Willingly

The Idea

Socrates believed that we always do either what brings pleasure or diminished pain. In a sense, he argued that we always tried to get closer to ‘good’ (pleasure) and steer away from ‘evil’ (pain, and what is ‘wrong’). He was also a firm believer in human rationality. If you combine both ideas you get the Socrates conclusion: Since we are rational, no one would consciously choose pain over pleasure, which means that people only do wrong because they don’t know any better.

Ket’s taking cigarettes as an example. According to Socrates, if people really knew how smoking affected them, they wouldn’t smoke. Now comes the tricky part: if you ask, “Well, my friend does know and he still smokes,” Socrates would answer, “if he really knew, he wouldn’t do it.” This is tricky because you cannot prove him wrong – nor can he prove himself right.

But it doesn’t matter who’s right here. What does matter is that he could be right…

Learn your way to pleasure

What really matters is the knowledge that you’re most likely harming yourself without knowing. Sounds scary at first, but I find it cool. It triggers in me a desire to find out what I’m doing wrong and change it. It makes me want to grow.

For example, it is this idea that has pushed me to inform myself about health so that I know exactly what harms me and what is good for me.

If you care about yourself – and Socrates says that you do! – then let this idea infect you and let the search for pleasure motivate you to learn, change, and grow.

3) Jean-Paul Sartre – You Are Doomed to Be Free

L’idée

Sartre’s Existentialism as a whole is very interesting. He starts with the assumption that there is no God and then draws conclusions about what it means to be human. One of his conclusions is that we are doomed to be free. Let me explain:

Since there is no God, we are born without an essence. We have no divine purpose or predetermined path. This means that we are absolutely free to do what we choose and build our essence through our actions. Sartre goes as far as to say that we can’t not be free, since we are only able to limit our freedom because we are free and can thus never rid ourselves of our freedom.

And with the freedom comes responsibility: because we are free, we can only blame ourselves for our results since we are the cause of our actions. Thus, everyone is responsible for their own life.

Liberté et responsabilité

Again, we are faced with a concept that can either be burdensome or liberating. Being free is nice and all, but if that also means being 100% responsible for one’s life, then freedom is not to be taken lightly.

Whenever I think of Sartre, I am reminded that, ultimately, it is my job to lead the life I want. Of course there are factors that I can’t control, but I have learned to be grateful for what I am given and that I must earn the rest.

I think a more livable conclusion is that we are not 100% in control of our lives, but that doesn’t rid us of responsibility. While we might not be the direct cause of an unfortunate circumstance, it is always up to us to decide how to respond to them and how to feel about them. (I have written more extensively about responsibility here).

4) Dan Millman’s Socrates – Moderation No More

The Idea

Besides the eponymous Greek philosopher, “Socrates” – “Soc” for friends – is also the name of a character in Dan Millman’s Way of The Peaceful Warrior. While Dan Millman is not considered a philosopher, Soc has some very empowering life philosophies. About halfway through the novel, Dan — the main character — asks Soc, “What about moderation?” Soc replies:
There is a saying when you sit, sit. When you stand, stand. What ever you do don’t wobble. Once you make your choice do it with all your spirit. Don’t be like the evangelist that thought about praying while making love to his wife and making love to his wife while praying.

It’s better to make a mistake with the full force of your being than to carefully avoid mistakes with a trembling spirit. Responsibility means recognizing both pleasure and price, making a choice based on that recognition, and then living with that choice without concern.”

Go Full-Out

You might have doubts about certain decisions, but once you’ve taken them, you should act “with the full force of your being,” since it is the only way to truly live an authentic life. This translates to always focusing on the task at hand, doing everything the best you can, and sticking with your decisions once you’ve made them.

There is no point in doing things half-heartedly.

What many do not know is that Sabu was also used by his handlers to facilitate the hacking of targets of the government’s choosing – including numerous websites belonging to foreign governments. What the United States could not accomplish legally, it used Sabu, and by extension, me and my co-defendants, to accomplish illegally. The questions that should be asked today go way beyond what an appropriate sentence for Sabu might be: Why was the United States using us to infiltrate the private networks of foreign governments? What are they doing with the information we stole? And will anyone in our government ever be held accountable for these crimes?
