You only have power over people so long as you don’t take everything away from them. But when you’ve robbed a man of everything he’s no longer in your power — he’s free again. ~ Alekdandr Solzhhenitsyn

A current pejorative adjective is narcissistic. Generally, a narcissist is anyone better looking than you are, but lately the adjective is often applied to those “liberals” who prefer to improve the lives of others rather than exploit them. Apparently, a concern for others is self-love at its least attractive, while greed is now a sign of the highest altruism. But then to reverse, periodically, the meanings of words is a very small price to pay for our vast freedom not only to conform but to consume.

In days a magical ancient forest could be opened up for logging if Australia persuades other governments to ditch its World Heritage status. But if enough of us get in touch with the World Heritage Committee members who are on the fence, we can get them to stand firm for this irreplaceable natural treasure -- add your voice now:

SIGN THE PETITION
Australia's government is lobbying furiously to remove World Heritage status from Tasmania's ancient forests. The decision is in days, but if we move fast we can keep these magical 90 metre, 3,000 year old trees alive.

A few World Heritage Committee members hold this irreplaceable forest’s future in their hands. They are sent their by our governments, but usually get little public attention. So if enough of us shine a spotlight on this decision and urge them to stand firm for the forest, we can get them to keep Tasmania’s tall trees standing, and stop other countries queuing up to trash their heritage.

Nine out of ten of Australians say they oppose the de-listing. Let's get behind them to ensure Heritage Committee representatives do their duty to protect these natural treasures. Sign the petition -- when 1 million people have signed we’ll take out a full page ad in a major international newspaper, and make sure all the delegates see it:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/world_heritage_under_threat_ptn_2/?binitdb&v=41417

These forests are important habitat for rare and threatened species such as the endangered wedge-tailed eagle and the Tasmanian Devil. Even the Forest Industries Association of Tasmania is against this destructive proposal, fearing that more timber flooding the market will make their sustainable timber unprofitable.

But the Australian government are throwing their diplomatic weight behind the de-listing of 74,000 hectares of protected forest, declaring that Australia is “open for business”. It's a crazy plan -- tourism dollars are incredibly valuable to Tasmania and its unique landscape and ancient forests are key part of it’s tourism pitch.

If the Australian government wins, it could set a dangerous precedent with world wide ramifications. Other World Heritage sites are under threat. Across South America and China dam projects threaten sites, and 17 sites in Africa have been classified as World Heritage in Danger. The World Heritage listing offers them critical environmental protection and oversight.

The World Heritage Committee has the chance to reject this proposal. Let’s quickly make sure they know the people of the world oppose this de-listing and want them to intervene to protect it.

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/world_heritage_under_threat_ptn_2/?binitdb&v=41417

Avaaz was built for moments like this. Where a jolt of people power can be the difference between one country’s government’s short term agenda triumphing over the immeasurable universal value of the extraordinary treasures of our earth. We can be the difference, let’s save this forest!

With hope,

Emily, Mais, Alice, Oli, David, Wissam and the whole Avaaz team
