LIVE in AWARENESS by Thich Nhat Hanh
by BarbIn Buddhism, the most important precept of all is to live in awareness, to know what is going on. To know what is going on, not only here, but there. For instance, when you eat a piece of bread, you may choose to be aware that our farmers, in growing the wheat, use chemical poisons a little too much.... When we eat a piece of meat or drink alcohol, we can produce awareness that 40,000 children die each day from hunger and that in order to produce a piece of meat or a bottle of liquor, we have to use a lot of grain. Eating a bowl of cereal may be more reconciling with the suffering of the world than eating a piece of meat....Every day we do things, we are things, that have to do with peace. If we are aware of our lifestyle, our way of consuming, of looking at things, we will know how to make peace right in the moment we are alive, the present moment. On this episode of Breaking the Set, Abby tackles the American Prison Industrial Complex as an operator of slave labor taking away government contracts from private industry. Sometime in your life,
hope that you might see one starved man,
the look on his face when the bread
finally arrives. Hope that you
might have baked it or bought it
or even kneaded it yourself.
For that look on his face,
for your meeting his eyes
across a piece of bread,
you might be willing to lose a lot,
or suffer a lot,
or die a little even.

Below is an email from Vicki Meyer, a MoveOn member in Sarasota, Florida, who created a petition on SignOn.org, the nonprofit
site that allows
anyone to start their own online petition.
If you have concerns or feedback about this petition, click
here.
Dear MoveOn member,
Whenever I see a political ad or hear a politician speak, I'm (1) angry because I know it is a lie, (2) confused because
I am not sure, or (3) pleased because I assume that my preferred candidates are speaking the truth.
Voters must be given the truth before they can make decisions that are in their own best interests and that of our country. That's
why I created a petition on SignOn.org to the Commission on Presidential Debates and the major TV networks, which
says:
Have unbiased fact checkers at the presidential and vice presidential debates so that voters can base their decisions on
facts rather than rhetoric.
As a mother of 6 and a grandmother of 13, I would like to leave the world a better place for the next generations. Voting
the right people into office is certainly a part of this.
Thanks!
–Vicki Meyer
